EcoDistricts AP Eligibility Requirements

To earn the EcoDistricts AP, candidates must:

  • Attend a one-day, in-person EcoDistricts Foundation Course OR online EcoDistricts Foundation Course (launching mid-year 2017), a full-day training to prepare you to sit for the AP exam
  • In addition to attending the Foundation Course, candidates are encouraged to prepare for the exam by studying the Protocol Certification Handbook
  • Pass an online exam of 75 multiple-choice questions with a score of at least 65

Once you’ve registered for the exam by clicking the button below, you will be prompted to log into your account to access your private exam link. The exam can be initiated at any time following registration; once you’ve initiated the exam, you will have 24 hours for completion.

Credential Maintenance

To maintain an EcoDistricts AP, individuals must acquire 30 credential maintenance (CM) hours every two years through the options below.

Attend or teach credential maintenance or education courses offered, or sanctioned by, EcoDistricts or the following organizations (CM hours are equivalent to course instruction hours unless specified otherwise by the provider):

  • Congress for the New Urbanism
  • Institute for Local Self-Reliance
  • International Living Future Institute
  • Permaculture Institute
  • Rocky Mountain Institute
  • U.S Green Building Council

Attend or teach credential maintenance or education courses related specifically to at least one of the Protocol Imperatives or Priorities offered, or sanctioned by, the following organizations (CM hours are equivalent to course instruction hours unless specified otherwise by the provider):

  • American Institute of Architects
  • American Planning Association
  • American Society of Civil Engineers
  • American Society of Landscape Architects
  • Institute of Transportation Engineers

Membership on the district team of a district registered for Protocol certification (8 hours/annually).

Local volunteer work on a neighborhood sustainability project that entails at least one of the Protocol Imperatives or Priorities (8 hours/annually).

Publication of a technical paper on a neighborhood sustainability topic related to at least one of the Protocol Imperatives or Priorities in a peer-reviewed journal (8 hours/annually).

Lapsed Credential

If the required credential maintenance hours are not reported every two years, the AP credential is suspended until the individual reapplies, pays the exam fee, and passes the exam again.

Credential Revocation

EcoDistricts may revoke an AP credential upon the reporting and verification of professional misconduct related to credential use. Misconduct is defined as unethical actions or submission of inaccurate or misleading information.
