Expanding the Equity Toolbox: Bottom Up Community Activation

This September 13-15, the EcoDistricts Summit comes to Denver, CO, and Summit attendees will spend two and a half days digging deep into how to build the sustainable, vibrant cities of tomorrow.

Day two of the EcoDistricts Summit will feature 12 interactive Studio sessions that will get participants ready to form, launch, and accelerate district scale sustainability. Bottom Up Community Activation for District-Scale Success

Performance in sustainable neighborhood or district design is often focused on brick and mortar metrics — achieving net zero building design, improving walkability scores, or expanding the availability and usage of green public spaces. While these metrics are important, citymakers continue to grapple with every-increasing challenges of social equity, access, and economic vitality that demand a putting stakeholders front and center in neighborhood design.

Millvale Ecodistrict in Pittsburgh, PA provides a real-world case study in how bottom-up community activation can create meaningful district-scale outcomes across equity, resilience and climate protection. In this charrette-style Studio, community leaders from Millvale Ecodistrict explore their approach in engaging community members to shape the places where they live, work and play. Particularly in vulnerable communities, developing truly equitable neighborhoods requires inspiring community members to move from participation to activation Successful districts empower residents, develop localized leadership, and inspire sustained action. This highly interactive session will incorporate small group discussions and hands-on exercises to put ideas to action.
