How the SW Ecodistrict Is Turning a ‘Pedestrian Dead-Zone’ into an Eco-Showcase

The Sustainability Plan of Washington, DC touts a major vision for the nation’s capital: In just one generation — 20 years — the plan proposes that the “District of Columbia will be the healthiest, greenest, and most livable city in the United States.”

And thanks to the hard work being done by stakeholders is areas like the SW part of the National Mall, the district is one step closer to making district-wide sustainability a reality.

The National Capital Planning Commission is overseeing a massive project to designate 15 blocks of southwest DC into the SW Ecodistrict, one of 10 projects participating in the 2-year EcoDistricts Target Cities pilot program.
